Toy Photography - Test

Tried William's tips on toy photography and here are the results of my experiment so far.

Still seeing some noise in my photos. Learnt that it's necessary for my cam's exposure to be left at '0' for close ups and at least '1.0' or '1.5' for full body shots. Will be experimenting with different distance of light sources later on.

Many thanks to William for the tips!

  1. Picture 2 looks rather ok.
The rest are a tad overexposed with background too distractingly bright, its the white from the light tent material?
    You used overhead lighting?
    Try both as side lighting.

You have got rather correct exposure, but the background should be changed to grey.
About overexposure, do not adjust the exposure compensation value too much, else your whole image will look too washed out. Try manipulating the intensity of the light source by moving the lamps slightly further away. The hair should look dark grey or black. The bright spots nearing the parting of the hair suggests overexposure and is rather distracting.

I have grossly edited your pic (without permission) to demonstrate how it will look if the background is not too bright and when the light intensity is not too strong, thus the hair looks accurately dark. The whole idea is to make the figurine looks less 'plastic'. Try manipulating the direction and distance of light to get the 'right' effect (like picture 2 which had good shadows and highlights). Viewing the preview on your camera LCD might not be the most acccurate, but it gives a good idea of the how it will turn out.

    Edited picture 3
